Kamala Harris' vice presidential running mate Tim Walz has claimed that he carried weapons in combat, that he and his wife conceived using IVF, claimed that he was a Command Sergeant Major in the National Guard when he was actually reduced to Master Sergeant when he retired, and it turns out that some of the Harris campaign's key staffers weren't aware of any of these things until they were made clear in the press.

Walz's false statements have ranged from his background in the National Guard to other facets of his career, such as when he claimed to be teaching students in Hong Kong while the Tiananmen Square massacre took place. According to a new report from Politico, "Key members of Harris’ circle weren’t aware of some of the inaccurate statements" from Walz "until they became public.” Many of the issues were not raised “despite the vetting process" for Harris’ VP pick.

This past Tuesday, the latest revelation on Walz’s false statements was brought up in the vice-presidential debate against Senator JD Vance (R-OH). He was asked about the false claim of teaching in Hong Kong while the Tiananmen Square massacre happened by the moderator.

Walz responded, “All I said on this was, is, I got there that summer,” and “I’m a knucklehead at times.” After being pressed more on the topic he conceded that he “misspoke.”

The statements could damage the message that Walz has tried to create for himself as being an honest, normal midwestern guy who happens to be the governor of Minnesota. The "misspoke" point has been used multiple times by the Harris-Walz campaign when they have had to clean up the false statements from Walz.

“As the governor has said, he sometimes misspeaks. He speaks like a normal person and speaks passionately about issues he cares deeply about including democracy and stopping gun violence in our school,” a Harris-Walz campaign spokesman said about the Minnesota governor previously claiming that he carried “weapons of war, that I carried in war" when he in actuality never fought in a combat zone.

Walz reportedly spoke to the Harris campaign about some concerns over false statements, such as past statements related to his 1995 DUI arrest when he was a school teacher. However, not all of the false statements were raised, according to Politico.

Although the campaign has used the excuse that Walz "misspeaks" frequently, veterans that served with him when he was in the National Guard have claimed differently. In an interview with Megyn Kelly in September, four veterans who had served with Walz thought he had a bad reputation for leaving his men as their deployment neared and that he was not an honest person.
