Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on Tuesday ducked a question about his claims that he was in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square protests when he wasn’t.

Mr. Walz has given conflicting answers about his time in Hong Kong. As recently as February, he told a podcast that he had been in Hong Kong on June 4, “when Tiananmen happened.” But he did not actually travel to China until August 1989 as part of a program sending American teachers abroad.

When pressed for an explanation on why he made the false claim, Mr. Walz simply responded, “I have not been perfect and I have been a knucklehead at times.”

When further pressed about his time in China, Mr. Walz said the experience brought him a better understanding of the world by traveling there. He also admitted he was not there during the Tiananmen Square protests.

“I got there that summer and I misspoke on this,” he said.
