Potentially Crippling Multi-State Port Strike Begins

At midnight, dock workers at ports from New England to Texas officially went on strike, spurring fears of widespread supply chain disruptions affecting supermarket food, consumer goods and much more.

Off the Job: The strike is said to involve 25,000 workers and will result in the shuttering of 14 ports. “The ports account for more than half of the nation’s container imports, facilitating the transport of everything from toys to fresh fruit to nuclear reactors, JPMorgan senior equity analyst Brian Ossenbeck said in a report,” ABC News relates. “A prolonged work stoppage of several weeks or months could rekindle inflation for some goods and trigger layoffs at manufacturers as raw materials dry up, experts state. ‘A strike would be very, very disruptive,’ said Jason Miller, a professor of supply-chain management at Michigan State University who closely tracks imports. ‘You can’t take all this freight and either send it to other ports or put it on airplanes,’ Miller added. ‘There is no plan B.’” Related: A longshoreman strike is bad for America – but worse for Kamala…

JD Vance Debates Tim Walz Tonight in NYC

The first and only scheduled vice presidential debate will be held tonight in New York City, moderated by CBS News. Republican nominee Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) squares off against Democrat Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. The debate begins at 9 pm Eastern time.

Ground Rules: “Both campaigns agreed to a 90-minute debate with two four-minute commercial breaks. Campaign staff are not allowed to interact with the candidates during the breaks,” CBS states. “There will be no audience. Candidates, who cannot bring pre-written notes or props on stage, will have two minutes to answer a question and two minutes to respond. They will be allowed one minute for rebuttals. Unlike the presidential debates, a candidate’s microphone will not be muted when their opponent is speaking, but CBS News reserves the right to turn off the microphones.” Related: Tim Walz and the Left’s new masculinity…

Judge Strikes Down Georgia Abortion Law

Georgia’s “heartbeat” abortion law banning abortions in the state after six weeks is unconstitutional, a Fulton County superior judge ruled Monday. “The ruling permanently enjoined the law and stated that abortions must now be regulated as they were before Georgia’s 2019 law took effect in July 2022, meaning they are allowed until fetal viability at about 22 weeks of pregnancy,” The Hill reports.

‘Personal Beliefs Of One Judge’: “Judge Robert McBurney said the state constitution’s guaranteed right to ‘liberty’ includes a person’s right to make decisions about their own health care,” the news site writes. “Once again, the will of Georgians and their representatives has been overruled by the personal beliefs of one judge. Protecting the lives of the most vulnerable among us is one of our most sacred responsibilities,” Republican Gov. Brian Kemp spokesman Garrison Douglas said of the ruling. Alec Baldwin Film Armorer Denied Prison Release

Rust movie armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed on Monday had her petition to be released from prison pending appeal of her conviction rejected by the judge overseeing the case. Gutierrez-Reed in March was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting that occurred on the set of the Alec Baldwin film. She was sentenced to 18 months behind bars for the killing of film cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Still Locked Up: “[T]he Court finds that Defendant has not established by clear and convincing evidence that Defendant is not likely to flee or pose a danger to the safety of any other person or the community if released,” New Mexico District Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer said in her decision, NBC News reports. “Sommer ruled that Reed’s conviction still holds even though the judge previously determined that the prosecution suppressed evidence in the involuntary manslaughter case against Rust star and producer Baldwin,” the network details. Tarnished MLB Hit King Pete Rose Dies at 83

Pete Rose, the all-time hits leader in Major League Baseball history whose high-energy approach to the game earned him the famous nickname “Charlie Hustle,” died Monday at his home in Las Vegas. He was 83.

Fallen Legend: Rose, a Cincinnati native, is best known for being a star cog in his hometown’s Big Red Machine teams of the 1970s. Those Reds won consecutive World Series titles in 1975 and ’76, reached two other World Series in 1970 and ’72 and claimed six National League West crowns in all during the decade. Rose left the Reds as a free agent after the 1978 season, signing with the Philadelphia Phillies and earning another World Series ring in 1980. After a brief stint with the Montreal Expos in 1984, he returned to the Reds that season as player-manager. Rose retired as a player in 1986 but continued managing until 1989, when his world collapsed as an MLB investigation determined he bet on games. Rose steadfastly denied the allegations for years, until finally admitting in 2004 that he did indeed commit the sport’s cardinal sin.
