A pair of shark attacks at separate Walton County, Florida, beaches less than two hours apart Friday sent an adult woman and two teenage girls to the hospital.
The first attack happened at around 1:20 p.m. near WaterSound Beach, when a 45-year-old woman was bitten while swimming past a sandbar.
She was critically injured in her midsection, pelvic area and lower left arm, South Walton Fire District Chief Ryan Crawford said at a press conference.
She was airlifted to a local trauma facility, the South Walton Fire District posted on Facebook, and her lower left arm was ultimately amputated.
At around 2:55 p.m., the second attack occurred at Seacrest Beach about four miles to the east. A pair of 15-year-old girls were hanging out with friends in waist-deep water when they were attacked, with one girl suffering major injuries to a hand and an upper leg and the other sustaining minor injuries to one of her feet.
The girl with more serious injuries was airlifted, while the other was taken to the hospital via ground travel. Fire officials did not name any of the victims, and the beaches were closed for the rest of Friday.
“It is rare, exceedingly rare to have three victims in one day,” Walton County Sheriff Michael Adkinson said at the press conference.
Fire Chief Crawford added “Marine life is out there. That’s their environment. when you go into their environment, unfortunately, as rare as these things are, these things can happen.”
Authorities did not say which exact species of shark were responsible in either incident.
