Embattled North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson was treated for second-degree burns Friday following an incident at a campaign event, according to his gubernatorial campaign. 

The incident happened in Mount Airy, North Carolina, at the Mayberry Truck Show, and he was treated at Northern Regional Hospital. He was expected to return to the campaign trail on Saturday. 

“He is in good spirits, appreciates the outpouring of well wishes and is excited to return to the campaign trail as scheduled first thing tomorrow morning,” campaign spokesman Mark Lonergan said in a statement.

The incident follows a tumultuous period for Mr. Robinson, who is under fire after a damning CNN report found the Republican candidate for governor made inflammatory comments on a pornography website’s messaging board, including calling himself a “black Nazi” and writing that “slavery was not bad.” He has denied the report.

Mr. Robinson has been the lieutenant governor of North Carolina since 2021 and is running against North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein, the Democratic nominee for governor. 

Despite the report and droves of Republicans distancing themselves from Mr. Robinson, he has refused to drop out of the race. 

Earlier this week, several top campaign officials quit his team, and former President Donald Trump has distanced himself from Mr. Robinson after often praising him as “Martin Luther King on steroids.” 

Mr. Robinson on Tuesday hired Binnall Law Group to investigate “false smears” in the CNN report and released an ad featuring his wife, Yolanda Robinson, urging voters to “forget what you have heard” about her husband.
