The Pentagon will ship about $225 million worth of military firepower to Ukraine in the first major security assistance package since the White House gave Kyiv approval to launch U.S.-provided weapons at military targets in Russia.
The latest Presidential Drawdown Authority package will be the 59th time the Defense Department has dipped into its stock to supply Ukraine with weapons since Russia invaded in February 2022.
Friday’s PDA includes anti-aircraft missiles; 155 mm howitzers and ammunition; armored personnel carriers; coastal and river patrol boats; grenades, demolitions and anti-tank rounds; and ammunition for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System.
“The United States will continue to work together with more than 40 allies and partners to ensure Ukraine’s brave defenders receive the critical capabilities needed to fight Russian aggression,” the Pentagon said in a statement.
President Biden recently signed off on letting American arms be used to strike targets inside Russia for the limited purpose of defending Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.
Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy met with Mr. Biden in France during the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy. They discussed Kyiv’s defense outlook and the battlefield in Ukraine.
“To effectively defend against the daily Russian terror, Ukraine must gain the ability to strike military targets on the territory of Russia,” Mr. Zelenskyy said Friday on his Telegram social messaging page. “It is also important to strengthen the defense of our Kharkiv region and speed up the delivery of American weapons.”
