The number of food recalls has remained alarmingly high in recent years, sparking speculation that everything from incompetence to a nefarious secret plot is behind the troubling trend.
Among the most recent examples is a widespread recall of products from a popular lactose-free dairy company.
According to Fox Business:
Dairy company HP Hood has voluntarily recalled Lactaid, a lactose-free dairy milk, in 27 states due to potential exposure to almonds, according to the company and the Food and Drug Administration.
The milk may contain trace amounts of almonds, which were not listed on the label and could pose a risk to people with an allergy or severe sensitivity if they consume the products. The FDA says these individuals may run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction.
HP Hood issued the recall Friday on 96-ounce containers of whole, 1%, 2%, fat-free and 2% calcium-enriched Lactaid Milk that were shipped to retailers and wholesalers from Sept. 5 through Sept. 18.
Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries or deaths associated with this recall thus far. Nevertheless, the development fueled some media discussion this week.

Yahoo provided additional details for those wondering if the milk in their refrigerator has been recalled:
The company says the affected Lactaid milk products can be identified by the code “51-4109 P2” and the best by date, both located on the top-center area of the 96 oz container.
Customers who purchased the recalled products are advised not to consume them and may return the containers to the point of purchase for a full refund or exchange.
HP Hood has provided a hotline for consumer inquiries at 1-800-242-2423, available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
