Tyreek Hill and the continued vilification of the country’s police officers

Two weeks ago, a viral video of the NFL wide receiver showed what happened when he broke traffic laws, ignored and disobeyed the commands of police officers, and was arrested. Hill thought he was above the law and instigated a confrontation with law enforcement officers. Despite this, Hill has been allowed to play in every game so far this season.

Many have tried to portray him as a victim, the latest person brutalized by the police force in this country. It’s the latest example of the left-wing, anti-police narrative that dominates the country and misrepresents situations to advance this dogma.

After calling for the officer he had a confrontation with to be fired, the star player for the Miami Dolphins met with police last week. He said that “there’s been some small steps forward” with his incident. However, this is problematic. There is no need to “move forward.” The police were not the problem. Tyreek Hill was.

Unfortunately, Hill’s response and the implied sentiments of “moving forward” are indicative of the contemporary despicable propaganda that depicts the police as evil and those in physical confrontations with police officers as docile, innocent victims. And in Hill’s case, to perpetuate this anti-police narrative, the fact that it wasn’t the police who instigated the situation is being ignored.

However, rogue, radical, left-wing politicians have eradicated the notion of respecting police officers long ago. Anyone who suffers the consequences of disrespecting and disobeying the police is now automatically viewed as a victim. Police are essentially expected to acquiesce to anyone who disobeys. The people who risk their lives daily to serve and protect have become targets of contemporary politics and categorized as villains. This is why Hill is being hailed as some kind of victim instead of being viewed as the problem.

“The reason for the spin is the left-wing anti-police slant that is the bread and butter of the liberal mainstream media outlets which gleefully pushed the ‘Defund The Police’ agenda without ever stopping to consider the consequences of such lunacy,” David Gelman, a criminal defense attorney and former deputy district attorney, said. “Bottom line, serving up the officer as the bad guy serves their purpose. As [for] Hill, he conducted himself like an idiot.”

“The officer told him to keep the window down,” Gelman said. “That is an easy command to obey. That is a safety issue. He has no idea who Hill is. A raised tinted window presents a huge officer safety issue as the officer can not see what is going on inside the vehicle. This is how officers get shot and killed during seemingly ‘routine’ motor vehicle stops. All Hill had to do was roll down the window. He did not do that and created the initial circumstances that led to the arrest.”

Hill’s claim (and the claim of those who support him) was that the police officer was needlessly aggressive. But this is little more than the perpetual victimization mentality that vilifies responsible residents and lionizes careless and reckless rulebreakers. This is the primary reason for the vitriol directed toward the police in this instance. It’s unwarranted.

“The officer’s actions appear to have been driven by legitimate safety concerns and a desire to gain control of the situation as he continued to deal with Hill and simultaneously attempted to deal with random people who were trying to interject themselves into the situation,” Gelman said. “Having said that, while the officer could not allow Hill (or any other driver to dictate the situation), the matter escalated very quickly, and there may have been ways to de-escalate the situation. The goal here was to issue the tickets and send him on his way without endangering the officers.”

“Hill should have complied,” the criminal defense attorney said. “Then none of this happens. Once Hill is non-compliant, the officer must deal with that. The officer is being ‘aggressive’ to maintain control of the situation. Having said that, since he is issuing him tickets, the officer can keep him there as long as necessary to do that. This gives Hill incentive to comply. Time is on the side of the officers in that regard. But you need to consider the officer safety issue created by Hill’s initial compliance. The officer is not required to place his life at risk because a driver is mad about being stopped.”

The country has lost sight of this central issue. People view police officers as expendable to justify the disrespectful and ignorant actions exhibited by a wealthy, arrogant professional athlete. Tyreek Hill was not a victim, as he and many in the media have said. He was the aggressor who sought to manipulate the political climate to rationalize his unnecessary antics.

Those who act like Tyreek Hill when interacting with law enforcement are the problem, not the police officers. The sooner everyone recognizes that, the better.
