Authorities in Lubbock, Texas, utilized a ‘Regional Bomb Squad Robot’ to take a suspect into custody after a standoff.

The suspect, Felix Delarosa, reportedly locked himself inside a hotel room.

“The Texas Department of Criminal Justice said there was a warrant out for his arrest because he violated his parole by tampering with his electronic monitoring device,” KCBD reports.

The standoff lasted approximately two hours.

“Police robot dodges a bullet, teargasses a man, and pins him to the ground during a standoff in Texas. 39-year-old Felix Delarosa was seen throwing a bedsheet on the robot and firing at it before getting teargassed by the device. Delarosa was wanted by Texas’ ‘anti-gang’ unit for a separate crime when the incident unfolded,” Collin Rugg wrote.

“The robot helped take Delarosa into custody before he was rushed to the hospital for his injuries,” he added.

KCBD reports:

Authorities used the Lubbock Regional Bomb Squad Robot to help take Delarosa into custody. When the robot arrived in front of the room, Delarosa took what appears to be a sheet and threw it over the robot to prevent it from shooting tear gas into the room.

The robot continued to move toward the broken window and Delarosa tried to push it away.

The robot’s operator successfully shook off the sheet and deployed tear gas into Delarosa’s hotel room.

After several minutes, Delarosa crawled through the broken window. The operator of the robot then drove it on top of Delarosa, pinning him to the ground.

That allowed the SWAT team to move in and take Delarosa into custody.

From the New York Post:

Delarosa — who had been wanted by the state’s anti-gang unit in connection with another crime — eventually surrendered, authorities told the station.

During the hours-long standoff, a SWAT team was called to the motel and negotiators tried to speak to the suspect, according to police.

Delarosa was treated at a hospital and taken into custody Wednesday afternoon. The charges he faces were not immediately clear.
