Farewell to NY’s own thriller
Nelson DeMille. We just lost one of our world’s favorite authors. He and I spoke often. Not long back we were on the radio together.
He constantly wrote about mysteries and danger. In 2017’s “The Cuban Affair” thriller his lead character was a US army vet. “Always highlight patriots,” he told me.
1990, his “The Gold Coast” best seller highlighted a “perfect Al Pacino type.” But movie got shelved. Then came, “The General’s Daughter.” High-stakes military investigator. So who played him in the film? John Travolta.
During our pandemic he told me, “Any author thinking of writing a novel on this coronavirus should rethink.”
In later years even his back list increased. His last book “Blood Lines,” dealing with Islamic terrorism, was as usual a best seller.
Nelson himself had spent time in an Arab community. To keep his characters and plot lines and sanity straight he used an ordinary blackboard.
A mutual friend described him as “a mensch.” He had great humor. I loved Nelson DeMille.
A stark view
Nice little tales around. Like a documentary on naked women. Sweet. “Body Parts” — cranked out years ago — has Rose McGowan, Rosanna Arquette, Jane Fonda shooting nude scenes. Lately the thing’s streaming on Starz.
Fonda: “I was drunk filming ‘Barbarella.’ My husband, director Roger Vadim, said he’d protect me. Cover my nudity. Didn’t happen. For some reason saying ‘no’ would’ve made me more vulnerable than being naked.”
Also you could catch a cold.
Chilling with ‘The Penguin’
Colin Farrell waddles, snarls and terrorizes Gotham as “The Penguin.” Other baddies helped his good performance — only he didn’t realize it.
Someone referenced Dustin Hoffman but, he says, “I never thought of that Ratso Rizzo portrayal.”
Another said De Niro as Al Capone in “The Untouchables,” which Farrell saw twice, and “Midnight Cowboy” five times and how he can look completely different with hours of prosthetics.
He also exec-produced this Max whatever series. It’s streaming now.
‘Real’ deal?
More. “Real Housewives” are making real money in real estate. Really.
Bethenny Frankel unloading her Bridgehampton hut for $5,995,000 — over twice what she paid in 2013.
t’s like a mil for each person on whom she’s thrown a drink. Oy, could these four bedrooms, three baths and a pool house talk.
Promo power
Coming up, Advertising Week New York 2024. Twentieth year. Four-day event. Oct. 7-10. Takes place at West 33rd’s Penn District. Drew Barrymore hosts. I don’t know why. Kevin Bacon’s a panelist. I don’t know why. Common — Oscar, Emmy, Grammy winner — will be there. Also Al Roker and Michael Strahan will be there. Also Shari Redstone who’s taking time off from suing over Paramount deals.
Brains behind this sent me an info dossier that’s longer than the Magna Carta. So if interested, call them — not me.
OK, now, to educate our readers, I choose to enlarge their knowledge factually. I alone know that historians have discovered why George Washington, crossing the Delaware, stood up in the boat. Every time he sat down, somebody handed him an oar.
