House Speaker Mike Johnson said “It’s too little too late” for President Biden to get credit for the administration’s expected executive order on immigration.
When asked by host Shannon Bream on “Fox News Sunday” whether he would give Mr. Biden credit, he said, “I don’t.”
“He’s trying to desperately show the American people that he wants to address the issue that he himself created,” said Mr. Johnson, Louisiana Republican.
“We documented 64 specific executive actions that President Biden and Secretary [Alejandro] Mayorkas at DHS took over the course of the last three and a half years, beginning on the first day that President Biden took office, to open the border,” he said. “Why? They did it intentionally, it’s had catastrophic effects upon our country that we’ll be living with for decades to come.”
The Biden administration is finalizing plans for a clampdown on the southern border that would halt asylum requests and automatically deny entrance to migrants once a daily threshold was passed, according to people familiar with the plans.
Republicans in Congress have argued for months that Mr. Biden has the ability to use executive action to close the border, but he’s just chosen not to. The administration’s immigration policies have been a point of contention for months between Republicans and Democrats.
“And now,” Mr. Johnson said Sunday, “he wants to issue some sort of executive order, I guess to show that, oh he really does care about the issue. The only reason he’s doing that is because the polls say that it’s the biggest issue in America.”
“The first question that comes up in almost every public forum is ‘What about that open border and why in the world would President Biden allow it?’ He did more than allow it, he engineered it and everybody knows that,” he added.
