House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) lambasted President Joe Biden ahead of the White House’s anticipated announcement of a crackdown on illegal immigration at the southern border only months ahead of the November election.
“He’s trying to desperately show the American people somehow that he wants to address the issue that he himself created,” Johnson told Fox News Sunday, adding that any action by the Biden administration was “too little, too late” following 36 months of unchecked border crisis.
Biden has reportedly been close to taking executive action on border and immigration policy throughout the spring with false alarms of forthcoming actions throughout April and May.
The Associated Press reported last week that Biden was close to signing an executive order that could stem migrants’ ability to seek asylum at the border.
At present, migrants who cross the border illegally may seek asylum, but because thousands of migrants are arrested daily, they are largely released into the United States to wait years before appearing in court and having their claims decided.
Biden is reportedly considering putting a cap on the number of people who may claim each day, a move that is likely to anger immigrant rights groups and Democrats.
Republicans, including Johnson, have chided Biden for not taking aggressive action to address the border crisis that began in early 2021 after he undid Trump administration border protocols.
However, Democrats have blamed Johnson and House Republicans for refusing to support a Senate border bill that would have taken aggressive actions to address the border.
The Border Patrol union, the National Border Patrol Council, has been critical of Biden since he took office but had endorsed the Senate bill and said it would have benefited agents if passed and signed into law.

Johnson maintained that Biden’s rumored plans to crack down on the border, where more than 9 million non-U.S. citizens have been encountered since February 2021, was nothing more than politics.
“The only reason he’s doing that is because the polls say that it’s the biggest issue in America,” said Johnson on Sunday. “Every state’s a border state.”
