The suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, has a colorful criminal history that raises numerous questions, including how he got ahold of the SKS-style rifle that he could have used to murder the former president and current Republican presidential nominee before he was stopped by Secret Service agents.

But whatever Routh’s criminal history, he has a verifiable history of parroting the Democratic Party’s talking points regarding Trump and the supposed threat he poses to the nation’s democratic system. In one post on X, Routh claimed that “DEMOCRACY is on the ballot and we cannot lose” in reference to the presidential election. He also visited Ukraine after the war with Russia broke out in 2022 and reportedly tried to recruit Afghani citizens to fight for Ukraine.

Ever since Trump emerged on the political scene in 2015, the legacy media and the Democratic Party have sought to associate every possible calumnious accusation with him: the second coming of Adolf Hitler, a fascist threat to democracy, a rapist, a racist, a wannabe dictator — the list of breathlessly hyperbolic slurs directed at the former and possibly future president is exhaustive.

At a certain point, there were going to be consequences. There are only so many times that one can accuse a prominent political figure of being Hitler and an existential threat to the well-being of the nation and its institutions before an overzealous opponent of said figure will take it upon himself to, in his mind, save the nation from this evil threat.

It seems that Routh, like many people on both sides of the political spectrum, but especially on the secular Left, sees politics as the most important aspect of human existence. Without a political cause to support, his life had no meaning. And more than supporting the cause, he has a history of declaring a willingness to die for a political cause, as he stated regarding his support for Ukraine.

“I AM WILLING TO FLY TO KRAKOW AND GO TO THE BORDER OF UKRAINE TO VOLUNTEER AND FIGHT AND DIE,” he reportedly wrote on X in 2022.

In 2022, a suicidal man allegedly attempted to kill Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and told law enforcement officers that he was angry at the justice for overturning Roe v. Wade and believed killing him would give his life meaning, even if it led to his death. And in 2017, a supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) critically wounded Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) during a baseball practice.

These crises and the willingness to exact violence on behalf of a political cause are emblematic of a spiritual emptiness that is plaguing a growing percentage of the population. When political figures such as President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and the legacy media rile up the Democratic base by engaging in doomsday rhetoric about their political opponents, there will inevitably be people who would rather resort to violence than live through the supposedly oppressive regime that Trump and the GOP will bring upon them.

If the leaders of the Democratic Party are serious about their belief that political violence is unacceptable and that they are glad Trump was unharmed, they should follow the lead of Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME), who said earlier this year that he refuses to “participate in a campaign to scare voters with the idea that Trump will end our democratic system.”

Golden correctly recognizes that the stakes of the election have been raised so high that if Trump wins, a large segment of the Democratic Party base will believe that totalitarian fascism has arrived in the United States and the ballot box is no longer effective. It will necessarily lead to an increase in political violence, and the liberal establishment will have incited every single instance of it.
