It can be legitimately argued that this presidential election has been the strangest in the country’s history. From the assassination attempts on former President Donald Trump to President Joe Biden being excommunicated, politically speaking, from running for reelection to Vice President Kamala Harris being anointed as the Democratic nominee, there has been a whirlwind of historic events in just a few months. Things took another strange turn last week during the debate between Harris and Trump when the Republican nominee for president cited a claim on social media that illegal immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were stealing people’s pets and eating them.

Trump shared the anecdote to heighten awareness of the many problems with illegal immigration and the failed border security policies favored by the Democrats and implemented by the Biden administration. However, instead of focusing on questionable claims about pets eaten by illegal immigrants, Trump and the Republicans echoing these accusations should instead return their focus to the tragedies of Laken Riley and Jocelyn Nungaray — two people who were slain by illegal immigrants. Unlike the notion of illegal immigrants barbarically eating pets, there is no uncertainty as to whether illegal immigrants killed Riley and Nungaray.

Yet, inexplicably, the killings of Riley and Nungaray have taken a back seat to stories about cats and dogs being eaten by illegal immigrants. This is unfortunate for multiple reasons. First, there is significant doubt over the veracity of the pet claims. Second, Riley, 22, and Nungaray, 12, were two women who would be alive right now if not for illegal immigrants. It’s indicative of the problems caused by Democrats such as Vice President Kamala Harris. Yet, people on the Right are too worried about speculative tales of eating pets that may be as reliable as sightings of Bigfoot or the Loch Ness Monster. Riley, Nungaray, and every person harmed by illegal immigrants are actual victims.

Sadly, at this political moment, it is the supposed pet deaths that have become synonymous with the problems of the immigration policies implemented by the Biden-Harris administration and favored by the Democrats. It has been the dominant example used by Trump and many on the Right in recent days to illustrate the troubles caused by illegal immigrants. Meanwhile, Democrats, as they seem to do with every accusation that negatively portrays them, scoffed and dismissed the allegations, saying that they are little more than baseless conspiracy theories — just as they did with stories about Hunter Biden’s laptop, censorship by Big Tech, and Joe Biden’s fitness for the presidency.

However, herein lies the problem. If the stories turn out to be accurate, then it’s just another example of the troubles caused by illegal immigration. However, suppose it turns out not to be true or it is confirmed on a much lesser scale than what many were led to believe. In that case, it threatens the credibility of many anti-illegal immigration supporters, and it will be seen as nothing more than the hyperbolic, misinformed ramblings of agenda-driven, right-wing fanatics, which Harris and the Democrats can weaponize. This could help Harris win the election, and if that happens, there will be many more Laken Rileys and Jocelyn Nungarays.

It may be tempting to express outrage over people’s pets being eaten by illegal immigrants in Springfield, Ohio. However, unless substantial and legitimate evidence surfaces that this is indeed happening, Trump, the Republicans, and everyone else in this country would be better served to prioritize the tragedies of Laken Riley and Jocelyn Nungaray. Their deaths are more than enough to highlight the failed immigration policies favored by Harris, Biden, and the Democratic Party. Because if someone isn’t outraged over their deaths, they’re certainly not going to care about cats and dogs.
