New polls show little shift against Trump after conviction; Republicans have his back

New polls are cropping up in the wake of former President Donald Trump’s conviction, with some Republican voters changing their minds about supporting him and a corner of independents thinking he should end his campaign.

Polls from Reuters/Ipsos and the Morning Consult, both released Friday, showed how voters perceived the former president and could spell signs of trouble for his campaign as Republicans and Democrats inch closer to their nominating conventions.

Polling from just a few weeks before the guilty verdict showed that Mr. Trump had narrow leads in key battleground states, like Michigan and Arizona, over President Biden, and that his then-ongoing trial had little sway on their views of the former president.

The latest Reuters poll found that 10% of registered GOP voters won’t support Mr. Trump in November after the conviction, but that’s consistent with how Republicans felt before the verdict. He was found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records for covering up a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels during his 2016 presidential campaign.

The same data set showed that 56% of Republicans said the verdict had no effect on their support of the former president, while 35% said they were likelier to support him because the charges against him were politically motivated.

A quarter of independent voters said the conviction made them less likely to support his reelection bid compared with 18% who said they were likelier to back him and 56% who contended the verdict would have no impact on their decision in November.

Meanwhile, the poll from Morning Consult showed a stark divide among independent voters.

Nearly half, or 49%, of independent voters believed that Mr. Trump should end his campaign. The same poll showed that 15% of Republican voters also said the former campaign should drop out because of the guilty verdict.

The Morning Consult poll showed that voters’ opinions of Mr. Trump changed little before and after the verdict.

After his indictment, 46% of voters felt enough evidence backed up the charges while 41% believed that the case was politically motivated. After the verdict, those numbers changed little, with 52% of all voters believing in the evidence produced during the trial, while 42% felt it was a political attack.

While Democrats largely remained resolute in supporting the prosecution of the case, the post-verdict data showed that some Republicans shifted from believing that it was a politically motivated trial to supporting the evidence that led to Mr. Trump’s conviction.

After the indictment, 12% of Republicans supported the evidence, but after the indictment that number grew slightly to 16%.

Both polls showed that nearly half of voters believed that Mr. Trump should be sentenced to prison; 46% felt that way in the Reuters poll compared with 44% in the Morning Consult data set. Those numbers are consistent with Democrats, who have been calling for Trump’s imprisonment for years.

Amid the latest from voters, the Reuters poll shows Mr. Trump and President Biden in a close race, with the incumbent holding a 1-point lead.

Trump pollster Tony Fabrizio, in a memo Friday, shot back at the narrative that the former president’s guilty verdict would sway voters against him.

Mr. Fabrizio wrote that “voters appeared to shrug at the court ruling” as balloting configurations showed no impact. Internal polling showed that Mr. Trump still held a lead against Mr. Biden in a variety of race scenarios that included a head-to-head battle and six-way contests with independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and others.
