Sweden’s center-right alliance government said on September 12, 2024, that they would be increasing the amount of money they pay foreigners who leave the Nordic country to up to $34,000.
Sweden has been getting a lot of non-white immigrants for many years. This trend grew very quickly in the 2010s and has now become a political problem.
From 2026 on, immigrants who choose to return to their home countries will be able to get up to 350,000 Swedish kronor ($34,000) from the government.
Forssell, who is in charge of migration, told reporters, “We are in the middle of a paradigm shift in our migrant policy.”
At the moment, foreigners can get up to 10,000 kronor for each adult and 5,000 kronor for each child. Additionally, every family can get up to 40,000 kronor.
Aspling of the Sweden Democrats, the biggest right-wing party in the right-wing coalition of the Swedish parliament, told reporters, “The grant has been around since 1984, but it isn’t well known, it’s small, and not many people use it.”
Forssell says that in 2023, only one person had taken him up on his offer.
He went on to say that more refugees would probably take the money and leave the country if more people knew about the grant and its size was raised.
He thinks this money offer would probably appeal to the several hundred thousand or so migrants who were either unemployed or who needed government aid to make ends meet.
Aspling said, “That’s the group we think would be interested.”
As a motivation for migrants to go back home, some European countries give them handouts. Norway pays only $1,400, France $2,800, and Germany $2,000 for each person. Denmark pays more than $15,000 for each person.
Ulf Kristersson became prime minister of Sweden in 2022 by making a deal with the Sweden Democrats to make immigration and crime laws stricter.
With 20.5% of the vote, the Sweden Democrats is now the second-largest party in Sweden in the 2022 election.
Since the 1970s, Sweden has given a lot of money to other countries as help, and since the 1990s, it has taken in a lot of refugees.
