On Sunday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said that his state will conduct its own investigation into how another would-be assassin managed to get within 500 yards of Donald Trump with a rifle. 

The Florida governor wrote, “The State of Florida will be conducting its own investigation regarding the attempted assassination at Trump International Golf Club. The people deserve the truth about the would-be assassin and how he was able to get within 500 yards of the former president and current GOP nominee.” 

The GOP nominee was playing the course at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida when US Secret Service (USSS) agents noticed the barrel of a rifle protruding through a chain link fence about 300 to 500 yards away and opened fire on the suspected assassin Ryan Wesley Routh. 

According to the FBI, Routh fled in a black Nissan but was quickly apprehended. Investigators found a GoPro camera, two backpacks, and an AR-style rifle that Routh left behind. 

When the shots were fired, Trump was on the fifth hole of the course and was taken to the course clubhouse by his USSS detail. This was the second assassination attempt on Trump in two months. 

On July 13 at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, Thomas Matthew Crooks fired eight rounds from the roof of a building approximately 150 yards away from the stage where the former president was speaking. Trump’s ear was struck by one of the bullets, and was within inches of losing his life.  

A bipartisan investigation into how Crooks was able to get so close to Trump is currently underway.

Reps. Mike Kelly (R-PA) and Jason Crow (D-CO), who are leading the investigation, said in a statement in response to the latest attempt on Trump’s life, "We are thankful that the former President was not harmed but remain deeply concerned about political violence and condemn it in all of its forms.”
