On May 24, Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry signed a bill that designates two abortion pills as controlled substances.
The legislation singles out the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol, which are used to carry out abortions, per the AP. It puts the abortion drugs in the same category as opioids, depressants, and other addictive drugs, according to a CBS News report. Landry’s signing of this law makes Louisiana the first state to pass legislation regulating the two abortion drugs.
The law will not punish pregnant women who own the pills but could result in the prosecution of other individuals who possess the pills without a valid prescription.
The new law will go into effect on October 1, started as a measure to ban “coerced criminal abortion by means of fraud,” the AP reported. The law was designed to punish individuals who unknowingly poison pregnant mothers with abortion pills.
Governor Landry contended in a statement that “Requiring an abortion inducing drug to be obtained with a prescription and criminalizing the use of an abortion drug on an unsuspecting mother is nothing short of common-sense.”
Republican states are finally growing a pair after the overturning of Roe v. Wade. It’s high time that they stop letting the cultural Left continue to gain influence and exert their power against Middle America. Republicans must use rational forms of state power to ensure that their policies are implemented and leftist influence is curtailed.
