The more things change, the more they stay the same.
At Sunday night’s Emmy awards, legendary TV actress Candice Bergen picked a fight with a Republican vice-presidential hopeful.
Just like Murphy Brown in the 1990s.
Ms. Bergen was presenting the award for best lead actress in a comedy series, an award she won a then-record five times for her titular role in “Murphy Brown.”
“I was surrounded by brilliant and funny actors, had the best scripts to work with, and, in one classic moment, my character was attacked by Vice President Dan Quayle when Murphy became pregnant and decided to raise the baby as a single mother,” she recounted.
The 78-year-old actress spoke with difficulty but had not lost her comic timing as she paused for a second before resuming.
“Oh, how far we’ve come. Today, a Republican candidate for vice president would never attack a woman for having kids. So, as they say, my work here is done,” she said.
She gave another pregnant pause.
“Meow,” she said, bringing down the house.
The sound was an obvious shot at Republican vice-presidential nominee J.D. Vance and his now notorious quip about the Democratic Party being run by “childless cat ladies.”
