Blackwater founder and former Navy SEAL Erik Prince is calling on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to take control of the investigation into the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on his West Palm Beach golf course.

Prince — whose organization had the distinction of never losing a protectee while protecting high-value targets in active war zones — has been a leading critic of the federal government in the weeks following the July 13 attempt on former President Trump’s life. In an X post Sunday, Prince suggested that the federal government cannot be trusted to handle the investigation into the latest attempt.

“Please assume direct control of the investigation into this attempted assassination of DJT. Tell the Feds to wait in line until Florida resources have done a thorough and transparent look into all the evidence,” Prince wrote in an X post addressed to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. “The Feds have dropped the ball thoroughly on Butler PA. Time for Florida to save the day especially since this attempt happened only 300m from the State Forensics Lab.”

Prince further explained his position in an interview with conservative commentator Benny Johnson.

“Governor DeSantis, love what you’ve done to the state of Florida. Now is the time to prove the Florida Bureau of Investigations’ merit in cracking this crime and not brushing it under the rug like happened in Pennsylvania,” he said.

Prince went on to reiterate that the federal government “cannot be trusted” to conduct an unbiased and thorough investigation. So again, the state government has a huge role in this in preventing assassination and murder in their state. Clearly the federal government cannot be trusted here. Sadly, it’s time for Governor DeSantis to flex up and see that this is done properly.”

Police have named Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, as the suspected gunman who was apprehended in Martin County, Florida, located just north of West Palm Beach.

Routh’s plan was thwarted when a Secret Service advance team spotted the barrel of a gun sticking out from behind a fence roughly 300 yards from the former president’s location on the golf course. An agent then fired at the suspect, who fled.

Investigators recovered a rifle from the scene that appeared to be fitted with a scope. It is not believed that Routh was able to squeeze off any shots before he was confronted, nor is it known whether the weapon was automatic or semiautomatic.

Routh — whose social media profile is littered with pro-Ukraine and anti-Trump content — was not armed at the time of his arrest.

Investigators also recovered two backpacks that were set up at Routh’s intended firing position, as well as a GoPro camera facing the direction he planned on firing in.

The former president’s schedule was not known to the public at the time of the shooting. It is currently unknown how Routh was able to obtain information concerning the former president’s whereabouts.
