The Israeli military has entered the center of Rafah, where it is continuing its offensive to root out Hamas terrorists in the southern Gaza city, military officials confirmed Friday.
Israel Defense Forces is now is operating in most parts of Rafah, southern Gaza’s most populous city where more than a million refugees had gathered after fleeing other war-torn parts of the enclave.
Roughly 1 million have fled the city since Israel launched its ground assault on May 6.
President Biden’s administration has yet to declare the offensive a “major operation” despite the humanitarian crisis it’s caused.
Biden said Friday that Hamas is “no longer capable” of carrying out another large-scale attack on Israel after 8 months of war. He urged the Israelis and Hamas to strike a long-term cease-fire deal that sees the return of the remaining Israeli hostages.
“Israel has made their proposal,” Biden said of Israel’s three-phase plan. “Hamas says it wants a cease-fire. This deal is an opportunity to prove whether they really mean it.”
Cease-fire talks between the two parties fell apart earlier this month despite a major push by the US and other world powers to secure a deal.
The initial assault on Rafah targeted the city’s eastern districts closest to its border and in the south along Gaza’s border with Egypt, taking control over the vital Philadelphi Corridor — a road that runs the length of the border on the Gaza side.
Then this week, Israeli troops moved into Rafah’s western districts where they encountered heavy resistance from Hamas fights, according to witnesses.
The IDF said in a statement Friday that troops had discovered several Hamas tunnels, weapons and a storage facility.
It’s not exactly clear where in central Rafah the military was operating, but witness reports indicate they may be in the Shaboura refugee camp near the city center.
The White House has yet to comment on the latest operations.
Dozens of tunnels have been discovered by the Israeli military, including 20 along the Egyptian border used to smuggle weapons and supplies.
An estimated 300,000 Palestinians are believed to remain in the Rafah area, with an unknown number still in the city itself.
Others have fled to rural areas and the Mediterranean coastline, a spokesperson for the Norwegian Refugee Council, a humanitarian group that operates in the area, told the Associated Press.
