Former President Donald Trump is safe after a representative said a shooting erupted Sunday near the Republican candidate’s golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Trump spokesman Steven Cheung said Mr. Trump “is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time.”
Secret Service officials said two people traded gunfire outside the Trump International Golf Course, according to the New York Post.
The shooters were targeting each other in a high-crime neighborhood near the club, the officials said, and the former president was never in danger.
Fox News host Sean Hannity said he spoke with Mr. Trump after the shots rang out when he was on the golf course. He said Secret Service agents helped get everyone to safety, and Mr. Trump is in good spirits.
“In typical ‘fight, fight, fight’ fashion, Trump [said] ‘I really wanted to finish the hole. I was even, and I had a birdie putt,’ and apparently it was on the fifth hole, which shows a lot of, I think, guts and gumption, and very Trumpian, I guess, in every way,” Mr. Hannity said.
The White House said in a statement that President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee for president, were both briefed on the shooting.
“They are relieved to know that he is safe. They will be kept regularly updated by their team,” the administration said.
The nearby shooting comes two months after an assassin took aim at Mr. Trump during a July rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
The former president suffered a grazing wound to the ear in the shooting, which killed one rallygoer and severely injured two others.
