ER Editor: We invite readers to notice how prominent anti-immigration stories are at the moment, with governments talking about tightening up their policies (at minimum, UK, Germany, Sweden, Italy, now the Netherlands; watch those cats in the US). A trend which ER approves of. And what about Ireland?

This is the Dutch government’s press announcement from yesterday, which browsers will translate into English —

Here’s an interesting phrase from this document: ‘the Netherlands must become a leader in Europe when it comes to admission rules.’ Notice that immigration is regarded as a crisis requiring new laws to deal with it. Was this the reason Dick Schoof, an unlikely politician, was brought in?

This Dutchnews.nl report from July suggests that Wilders-selected PM, Schoof, controversial for coming from the intelligence services, had immigration as his priority from the get go:

Schoof says migration is top priority, pledges to protect rights

Prime minister Dick Schoof has told MPs that controlling migration will be the new Dutch government’s number one priority in his first debate since taking office.

The former head of the intelligence service said voters had given a “crystal clear message” to politicians that they wanted to see the social impact of immigration tackled. “Whichever way you look at it it, this is the issue that leaps out,” he said.

“Put yourself in the position of someone living in Ter Apel or Budel [the first points of arrival for refugees], or a student with no chance of getting a room, or someone surrounded by premises where labour migrants are housed in the most degrading conditions,” he said. (ER: To our knowledge, local residents are really suffering in these small Dutch towns.)

Schoof said the government would spend the summer drawing up detailed plans on issues such as housing, healthcare and the cost of living. He said pressure on public services from migration needed to be reduced “so that support remains for genuine refugees”
