Nothing says democracy quite like ice cream, and that's why MoveOn is sponsoring an "Scoop the Vote," a get-out-the-vote initiative for swing states across the US featuring Kamala Harris-themed ice cream flavors. They have enlisted known progressive dippers Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield of Vermont-based Ben & Jerry's to create the brand new ice cream flavors just for the occasion.
Flavors include Kamala's Coconut Jubilee, Unburdened by What has Vanilla Bean, Inauguration Celebration Birthday Cake, Fight for Our Rights Sorbet, and MoveOn Mobilizer Milk Chocolate. One must wonder if the Unburdened by What has Vanilla Bean is a send-up of the United States' allegedly historically racist past.
While MoveOn claims the ice cream will be free, special guests will be on hand, undoubtedly taking up your time with speeches, in an effort "to reach and engage voters." Ice cream is notably President Joe Biden's favorite food, at least judging from how many photo opps he's had with a cone in his hand.
"Coming together as a country to elect Kamala Harris and Democrats down the ballot to protect our freedoms and futures," MoveOn writes in promoting their events. "We’re taking an ice cream truck on tour, rolling through swing areas handing out free ice cream to engage people around voting and the issues we care about. At each stop, we’ll help you make a plan to vote on November 5, show you how you can triple your vote, and enjoy some free sweet treats together."
"We must push back against those trying to limit our freedoms," they continue, "and fight for an America where everyone can thrive. Together, we can defeat—and melt—MAGA Republicans at the ballot box this November and joyfully celebrate this inspiring moment with ice cream along the way!"
Despite their insistence on creating "an America where everyone can thrive," MoveOn's materials for their Scoop the Vote are replete with lies about those they seek to defeat.
"We won't go back!" They write, though it's unclear what they think we're all being dragged back to. "Project 2025 and MAGA Republicans want to impose their way of life on all Americans," they write nonsensically. "By controlling our bodies, what we read, whom we love, and how we worship, they aim to erase the beautiful diversity that makes America such an incredible country. Between tax cuts for the wealthy and attacks on abortion access, IVF, reproductive care, and so much more, we’ve seen what MAGA Republicans are capable of doing when they have power. Our rights and futures are at stake this November, and it’s up to us to elect Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to protect them!"
Project 2025 has no affiliation with Donald Trump or his polices. Trump has announced that he'd require insurance companies to pay for IVF and that he would not enact any kind of federal abortion ban at all. There have been no book bans, though there are laws in Florida where parents can flag books in school libraries they feel are inappropriate. Trump had the first openly gay cabinet member in Ric Grenell.
The ice-cream socials will pop up in Philadelphia, New York, Ann Arbor, Madison, Phoenix, and Las Vegas, among others that will be named along the way. You can find a stop near you here, and of course there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer.
