Republican presidential nominee Donald J. Trump announced plans for new tax cuts on Thursday, claiming that he would put an end to all taxes on overtime pay if elected in November. The 45th president made the pledge during a campaign speech in Tuscon, Arizona.
"As part of our additional tax cuts, we will end taxes on overtime," Trump said to an excited crowd. "The people who work overtime are among the hardest working citizens in our country and for too long, no one in Washington has been looking out for them."
According to Trump, economists have expressed their approval of his proposed policy, asserting that it has the potential to generate an entirely new workforce.
"That gives more people an incentive to work," Trump stated as he made a play for battleground Arizona, a key state that could decide the outcome of the presidential election.
Arizona has been won by Republicans in virtually every presidential election since World War II; however, Biden achieved a narrow victory in 2020.
The emergence of Arizona Democrats has been influenced by the arrival of transplants from blue states and a political realignment that has seen suburban voters turn out support for Democratic candidates, particularly women, as per PBS News.
Republicans continue to outnumber Democrats in Arizona; however, one-third of voters identify as independent. Last week, in a predominately Republican area of Phoenix, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, Trump's running mate, attended an event accompanied by Charlie Kirk, the founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA.
The GOP nominee has also vowed to eliminate tax on tips as part of its economic policies, a promise that the Harris campaign later copied.
