On September 5, 2024 former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion Conor McGregor teased a potential presidential run in Ireland after posting a long message on social media.

Ireland has been recently rocked by the noxious effects of mass migration and a growing cost of living crisis, largely brought about by mass migration.Towards the end of 2023, Irishmen took to the streets and violently protested against their government inaction on the issue. This environment has prompted McGregor, a native of Dublin, Ireland, to potentially throw his hat in the political ring. McGregor described himself as the “only logical choice” for the upcoming election. 

“As President I hold the power to summon the Dáil as well as dissolve it,” he stated, making a reference to the lower house of the Oireachtas —Irish legislature. “So as I said before, I would have all the answers the people of Ireland seek from these thieves of the working man, these disrupters of the family unit, these destructors of small businesses, and on and on and on!” 

“These charlatans in their positions of power would be summoned to answer to the people of Ireland and I would have it done by day end. Or I would be left with no choice but to dissolve the Dáil entirely,” he added. 

“Stop the train until. The people of Ireland deserve the answers they seek. Point blank. This would be my power as President. I know very well. Ireland needs an active President employed wholly by the people of Ireland. It is me. I am the only logical choice. 2025 is upcoming…”

Michael D. Higgins is the current president of Ireland, and is serving in his second, seven-year term, thereby rendering him ineligible for re-election in the 2025 presidential election

McGregor was initially slated to face off against former Bellator lightweight champion and current lightweight challenger Michael Chandler at UFC 303 in June 2024. According to the UFC’s lightweight rankings, Chandler is ranked in 8th place. 

However, the fight was scrapped, after McGregor broke his toe during his training camp. He promised to make a speedy recovery, but UFC President Dana White announced in August that McGregor was unlikely to return to the Octagon later this year

“We talked, and he wants to fight,” White revealed at the time. “We’ll figure it out. Not this year. He won’t fight this year.”

McGregor responded to White’s comment on social media, asserting that he was eyeing to fight Chandler at the end of 2024. 

“Ah Dana, December is the date,” he said in a post on X. “Bring the calendar year home with a winning event! Come on now, what’s this? I am off to altitude next month to prepare. December! Tell Dana and UFC we want December! We deserve December!”

McGregor has not fought since Dustin Poirier defeated him in 2021 via technical knockout (doctor stoppage). The Irish MMA fighter enjoys an overall record of 22 wins and 6 losses. However, since winning the lightweight championship in 2016, McGregor has not been active in the Octagon and has had a 1-3 record. 

The Irish fighter has clearly been declining and is perhaps looking for other ventures outside of combat sports to keep himself busy.
