Boston Mayor Michelle Wu has been revealed to support abolishing Boston Police’s gang database and stating that charges such as shoplifting, drug possession, and trespassing should not be charged.

Wu, who has previously come under fire for holding a segregated holiday party for "elected officials of color," made this known in the 2021 Boston Mayoral Candidate Questionnaire form from Progressive Massachusetts, a nonprofit group that ranks the progressiveness of elected officials, according to the Daily Mail. Wu took office in November 2021.

On the questionnaire, Wu was asked whether she supports then-Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins’ "do-not-prosecute list and expanded approach to dealing with such low-level offenses." Wu responded, "Yes."

Wu was also asked if she supported "shuttering the Boston Police gang database," to which she responded, "Yes."

Rollins released a policy memo in 2019 that stated that charges of trespassing, shoplifting, larceny under $250, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace, receiving stolen property, minor driving offenses, breaking and entering where the property is vacant or "for the purpose of sleeping or seeking refuge from the cold and there is no actual damage to property," wanton or malicious destruction of property, threats excluding domestic violence, minor in possession of alcohol, drug possession and intent to distribute, and a standalone resisting arrest charge or a resisting arrest charge issued in conjunction with the other charges on the list.

"Instead of prosecuting, these cases should be (1) outright dismissed prior to arraignment or (2) where appropriate, diverted and treated as a civil infraction for which community service is satisfactory, restitution is satisfactory or engagement with appropriate community-based no-cost programming, job training or schooling is satisfactory," the memo stated.

Wu in the questionnaire also stated that officers involved in the January 6 "Capitol insurrection" or who have been found to have an "affiliation with white supremacist organizations" should be terminated.

She stated that she supported safe consumption sites for illicit drug use, said the city needed to reduce car usage and "dramatically shift commutes to sustainable transportation," supported the end of information sharing between Boston Police and ICE, and supported the banning of rubber bullets, "attack dogs," tear gas and other chemical weapons.

In response to the report, Rep. Jim Jordan stated, "Boston’s Democrat mayor says criminals should not be prosecuted for theft. What could go wrong?"
