Pennsylvania Democrat Senator John Fetterman received a standing ovation during his commencement speech at Yeshiva University in New York after tearing off his Harvard University collar, saying he was “profoundly disappointed” in his alma mater, according to the New York Post.
Fetterman, who has been a steadfast supporter of the Jewish state since Hamas terrorists massacred over 1,200 civilians on Oct 7, said, “I was putting together my speech, and I started to reflect, the way probably all of you do, it was literally a quarter-century ago, 25 years ago, and I was graduating from Harvard University.”
As he paused, there were some boos and hisses in the crowd aimed at the Ivy League institution, followed by some laughter, as Harvard has become infamous for antisemitism on campus that has been mostly ignored by the administration. Their last president was forced to resign after a failure to fully condemn the antisemitism on the Cambridge campus during a congressional hearing on the matter.
“But today," Fetterman continued, "I have been profoundly disappointed in the way — Harvard’s inability to stand up for the Jewish community after Oct. 7. And for me personally, I do not fundamentally believe that it is right for me to wear this today.”
The senator removed his collar and the audience rose to a standing ovation. Fetterman added, “The Jewish community everywhere deserves our support. And I promise you will always have mine.”
Following the ceremony, Fetterman could be seen dancing with graduates, rabbis and members of the school’s administration.
Fetterman previously criticized Harvard, stating, “As an alum of Harvard — look, I graduated 25 years ago, and of course, it was always a little pinko. But now, I don’t recognize it.”
