China, Human Rights, and Totalitarian Hypocrisy

China's record on human rights is abysmal. After all, allegations of ethnic cleansing via the forced sterilization of the Uighur population, among a litany of other offenses, it's exactly a good look.

Which makes it hilarious when China tries to claim our lack of gun control is a human rights abuse.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who don't see the right to keep and bear arms as a basic, natural right. China doesn't, obviously, because nothing I have ever seen from them suggests they think people have rights in general, much less particular rights endowed to them simply because they are living, breathing people.

But another thing that has struck me as hypocritical from the totalitarian regime is how often they contribute to putting guns and gun-related items into the wrong hands.

That was driven home yet again with an arrest in Santa Rosa, California.

A Santa Rosa man is suspected of illegally manufacturing and possessing a cache of guns and rifles seized Tuesday by police.

Bon Kim, 44, was arrested at a home in the 500 block of El Capitan Way, according to the Santa Rosa Police Department.

He is suspected of being a felon in possession of a gun and ammunition, manufacturing and possessing an assault weapon, possessing a short-barreled rifle, importing a handgun to California, possession of an expandable baton and possessing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

According to police, an investigation began in late April when authorities “intercepted” a gun part Kim is believed to have imported from China.

This isn't the first time we've seen a Chinese source for something that turned up in a police investigation. Chinese companies are shipping all kinds of gun-related products to the United States.

And, to be fair, there's nothing wrong with this in and of itself. I'm a believer that free trade creates free people, by and large, and trading with China is probably a good way to keep them from getting to expansionist, if nothing else.

But I find it hypocritical, to say the least, that they decry our right to keep and bear arms and yet don't even blink about exporting products they don't think you and I should be permitted to own.

That includes full-auto switches, for the record, which actually are illegal, yet routinely end up here via Chinese sources.

The Chinese government isn't exactly "hands-off." It's an authoritarian regime where the government exerts extensive control over the private sector. They're not as fully communist as they were back in the day, but that's probably because they like to have food. That doesn't mean, however, that they're fully in support of free trade.

As such, if they were genuinely concerned about the supposed human rights issues here in the states, why not simply cut off all exports of certain products to the United States, at least for civilian sale? It would be consistent with their stated beliefs, right?

The reason is simple. They like being able to pretend they're the voice of reason. They like attacking us for supposed human rights abuses, all because that becomes the story with an American media notoriously sympathetic to totalitarian regimes.

But the truth is that Chinese companies--and, by extension, the Chinese government--is doing its best to fuel the problem. If our rights are a human rights offense, then what is their effort to export products in an effort to make things worse?
