An Indonesian groom discovered his new wife is actually a man who tricked him into marrying in a wild scam for money.
The 26-year-old husband identified in local news reports only as AK wed his girlfriend of more than a year in April only to find out that his bride was really a groom less than two weeks after their wedding day, the South China Morning Post reported.
AK met his future wife, reportedly named as Adinda Kanza, through Instagram last year and the pair agreed to meet in person to pursue their relationship further, according to the outlet.
When they dated face-to-face, Kanza always had a niqab, a traditional face covering worn by some Muslim women that covers the wearer’s whole head and face except their eyes.
Kanza, also reportedly 26, told AK she was a devout Muslim and had no living family, the local publication reported.
The couple married in a small ceremony at AK’s home on April 12, with Kanza bringing five grams of gold as dowry, the Morning Post reported.
But married life did not go as planned with AK soon feeling that something was off with his new wife.
Kanza continued to wear her niqab in the house despite Muslim tradition allowing the wearer to remove it in the presence of her husband in their home.
She also avoided any acts of intimacy or sex, saying that she was menstruating or not feeling well, according to local reports.
Growing suspicious, AK looked into his new life partner’s background and found her previous family home. He went to the address and was shocked to meet Kanza’s parents, despite her claims they had died.
The family, who had no idea they had a new son-in-law, informed AK that Kanza was actually their son.
The man — identified in reports as ESH — had been dressing as a woman since 2020 and had a “somewhat high-pitched” voice that sounded like a woman, police said, according to local media.
It’s unclear what his sexual orientation or gender identity is.
He reportedly told investigators that he posed as a woman and married AK to steal his family’s assets.
ESH was arrested and taken into police custody on fraud charges. He faces up to four years in prison if convicted, according to the Morning Post.
