The Florida Board of Governors recently removed “Principles of Sociology” as a general education course in the Florida university system. In doing so, this introductory sociology course will no longer count for general education credits.

On top of that, the board of governors voted to ban universities from spending money on “diversity, equity, and inclusion” programs, in order to align its policies with state law.

The board of governors generally establishes academic standards for Florida’s university system. 

Instead, an American history survey class would be added to its general education course list

This vote follows in the footsteps of a similar decision made by Florida’s  Board of Education. The BOE’s vote on January 17, 2024 will be applied to Florida’s colleges, which includes two-year community colleges. 

Florida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz pushed for these changes in order to promote more civic literacy among the Floridian population.  Florida is yet again showing why it’s a bulwark against the cultural leftist insanity’s that engulfing most of the US. 

While sociology is an interesting field of study that merits considerable academic attention, it should not be actively boosted by taxpayer-funded institutions. The fact is that these departments are laboratories for leftist activism. For that reason, state governments should do everything possible to deemphasize such course material and not make it mandatory for students to take. 

If students want to learn about sociology, they should do it on their own time and on their own dime.
