During Hillary Clinton's surprise appearance at the Tony Awards over the weekend, she complained in a joke to the audience about her election loss in 2016 against President Donald Trump, however, the joke fell flat.

The former Secretary of State, 76, got a standing ovation when she walked out onto the stage at the Tony Awards, where she would introduce a performance of "Suffs," a musical she helped to produce about the women's suffrage movement. However, she also attempted to make a joke about her loss in 2016 to Trump while making the announcement, per the New York Post.

“I have stood on a lot of stages, but this is very special. And I know a little bit about how hard it is to make change," she quipped about the 2016 election. While some elites in the crowd started laughing, the room was mostly silent in response to the joke. “I’m extremely proud of this original American musical by Shaina Taub — now a two-time Tony winner,” she added.

“And of course, it is about some American originals: the suffragists who fought so valiantly for so long to give women in our country the right to vote," Clinton remarked. The former first lady, who also won an Emmy Award in 2023, encouraged people to vote in the upcoming 2024 election, reminding them of how the suffragettes fought for the right to vote.

“It’s almost impossible to think about what a challenge that was, but now it’s an election year, and we need to be reminded about how important it is to vote, so please welcome the company of Suffs," she added.

Clinton has become a proponent of Biden's reelection bid leading up to the 2024 election. In the later part of 2023, Clinton hosted a fundraiser for Biden's re-elect effort and brought in just under $1 million for the incumbent president, as reported by NBC News.
