Gun jams as man tries to shoot Pennsylvania pastor

Police in Pennsylvania said they arrested a man Sunday who tried to shoot a church pastor because “God told him to do it” until his gun malfunctioned.

Pennsylvania State Police said they charged Bernard J. Polite, 26, with attempted homicide for pulling a gun on the clergyman during the 1 p.m. service at Jesus’ Dwelling Place Church in North Braddock.

Video from the church’s live stream shows the suspect walk in front of the Rev. Glenn Germany midsermon and aim the weapon at him.

The pastor is then seen running for cover behind the pulpit while a parishioner from the crowd jumps up and tackles the suspect. Mr. Germany then reemerges to help disarm the gunman.

Court documents revealed that Mr. Polite told police he tried to shoot the reverend because “God told me to do it.” His plan was to be arrested and go to jail so he could clear his mind.

“I am feeling grateful that I woke up this morning and that I am here. It could have gone an opposite direction,” Mr. Germany told The Associated Press. “But God has intervened and I am grateful for him.”

Police also said they found the body of Derek Polite, 56, with gunshot wounds inside a home near the church where Mr. Polite was arrested.

Authorities didn’t say if Derek Polite and Bernard Polite were related.

Braddock is 10 miles east of Pittsburgh.
