Desperation is the mother of invention, as they say. As Israel issued an evacuation order for over 100,000 Palestinians in Rafah, Hamas suddenly agreed to the proposal by Egypt and Qatar to get a temporary ceasefire. Problem is that the Hamas statement makes no mention of the hostages. The US is “reviewing” the proposal and the response. Israel has not issued a statement as of this writing.
Hamas leadership is said to be holed up deep underground in Rafah, complete with human shields, some of whom are the hostages. The world wants Israel to skip the response and walk away (or dissolve their country and die). Neither of which is going to happen. But the propaganda war is raging.
The IDF has expanded the humanitarian area in Al-Mawasi to accommodate the increased levels of aid flowing into Gaza. This expanded humanitarian area includes field hospitals, tents and increased amounts of food, water, medication and additional supplies.

On May 5, Hamas launched a rocket attack from Rafah that killed 4 IDF soldiers attempting to bring humanitarian aid to the Palestinians at the Kerem Shalom crossing.

The parameters of the deal have not yet been released, but broadly, The Hill reports:
“But the broad contours of the deal is a six-to-eight week pause in fighting, in which Hamas would release Israeli hostages it has held since it kidnapped them from Israel on Oct. 7. The release of the hostages would occur in phases, with the most vulnerable of the 133 believed to be in Gaza released first.” The Hill
It is likely that some of those hostages are no longer alive.
Israel cannot afford to let Hamas live after what they did on October 7. No matter how this ceasefire plays out, or how many of the hostages are released, they must destroy Hamas. Netanyahu stated that their operation in Rafah would be “limited” in scope. That is easier said than done in tunnel warfare.
