Former President Donald Trump‘s vow for mass deportations of illegal immigrants has garnered some controversy from some activists, but a new poll shows it is popular among most adults.

An Axios Vibes poll released on Thursday found that 51% of adults support mass deportations of illegal immigrants. The survey comes as various cities, including New York City and Chicago, are seeing significant numbers of illegal immigrants arriving after entering through the southern border.

The poll showed that a clear majority of Republicans, 68%, back the idea, while 46% of independents and 42% of Democrats support mass deportations of illegal immigrants. Among age groups, those in the baby boomer generation or older are most in favor of mass deportations, 60%, with younger groups being less in favor of the proposal, with Generation Z, 35%, being least supportive of the idea.

A Pew Research estimate from 2021 shows the country has roughly 10.5 million illegal immigrants, while the country has an overall population of roughly 336 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The survey from Axios also found that 46% of Republicans and 30% of Democrats are in favor of ending birthright citizenship. Trump has proposed ending birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants.

While adults in the poll had a sharp opposition to illegal immigration, it also showed that 58% are in favor of expanding legal pathways for immigration.

Border security and immigration were thrust into the spotlight for the presidential campaign after President Joe Biden made a push for Congress to pass a border security bill — which ultimately collapsed after GOP opposition.

Republicans who opposed the bill, including Trump, argued that Biden already had the powers needed for him to secure the border, and claimed the legislation did not go far enough.
