Maine Governor Janet Mills is advancing legislation that facilitates gun confiscation in the state. This push for civilian disarmament comes in the wake of the October 25, 2023 mass shooting.
In this massacre, a deranged gunman, Robert Card, slaughtered 18 people.
AWR Hawkins of Breitbart News observed that Maine already has a yellow flag law on the books. Such legislation grants police the power to obtain a judge’s order to seize guns from a gun owner deemed to be a threat to himself or other individuals.
Curiously, the police were informed about Card’s erratic behavior and questionable mental state by his family before he carried out the mass shooting. However, law enforcement ultimately did not act to confiscate his firearms.
According to Breitbart News, the family reached out to the police owing to how they were growing concerned with Card’s deteriorating mental state. Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry revealed that Card’s family reached out to his office on May 3, 2023.
Merry recounted that the family believed Card’s mental state had reached a nadir in January 2023 and “they were worried about his well-being and noting his access to guns.”
Additionally, FOX News contributor Paul Mauro, a retired NYPD inspector, called attention to how Robert Card had allegedly made threats to attack a military base.
While questions still exist as to why police did not act despite having a state yellow flag law on the books, KGME published a report that Governor Mills wants to modify the law in order to allow police to take gun owners into custody easier. She is particularly focused on allowing a “third party” reference of being a sufficient actor to justify taking gun owners into custody.
On top of that, Mills’ official website makes it abundantly clear that taking gun owners into custody is to subsequently have law enforcement scour the gun owner’s property and “remove their weapons.”
There’s a clear push by blue states to push for gun confiscation. There’s no middle ground in the increasingly polarized US. Red states need to take proactive measures to prevent the passage of such anti-freedom laws.
