The villain of the FAFSA debacle is finally leaving

Amid a deluge of leftist policymaking, the Biden administration provided a shred of good news Friday when the Department of Education announced that Richard Cordray, the COO of the Office of Federal Student Aid, will soon leave his post.

The announcement is a welcome development as Cordray has overseen one of the worst policy debacles of the Biden administration in the rollout of the new version of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

When Cordray took over FSA in May 2021, he had more than two years to ensure that the launch of the new FAFSA application was successful and served the goal of making this onerous and cumbersome application simpler for colleges, students, and families alike.

Instead, Cordray’s three-year perch atop FSA has been nothing short of a disaster, as the FAFSA rollout has proven to be one of the administration’s greatest failures. Delays, glitches, and errors compounded over months as schools and students are still dealing with the effects of this bureaucratic fiasco more than four months after the application finally went live.

In his acknowledgment of Cordray’s departure, Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona tellingly did not mention the FSA chief’s role in rolling out the new FAFSA.

“We are grateful for Rich Cordray’s three years of service, in which he accomplished more transformational changes to the student aid system than any of his predecessors,” Cardona said.

The next FSA chief has a lot of work to do to clean up the mess left by his predecessor. The delays and errors in administering the application are going to affect higher education for years to come.

At least for today, students, families, and schools can breathe a sigh of relief that the incompetent administrator responsible for the problems with the new FAFSA will soon be gone and the work to restore trust in FSA can begin.
