(New York City, N.Y.) Manhattan District Alvin Bragg strenuously objected this week after Judge Juan Merchan instructed the jury in Donald Trump’s hush money trial to be fair.

“In light of this court’s ‘be fair’ instructions to the jury, this office must strongly object,” said a court filing by Bragg’s office. “The purpose of this trial, as we believed everyone involved understood it, was not the pursuit of justice but rather an effort to punish the defendant for his criminal pursuit of the presidency. New York cannot and should not be a party to any effort designed to undermine democracy, at least as we define it, and yet by instructing jurors to ‘be fair,’ this court now seems to believe that the defendant is entitled to the same rights as all other Americans. This office finds the court’s position unacceptable.”

It’s not clear when Merchan is expected to issue a decision in the matter, but he did inform Bragg’s office to “keep up the good work.”
