Judge Snaps at Trump As Former President Says ‘I Don’t Know This Woman’ on Way to Witness Stand

The defamation trial against Donald Trump, with a claim of $10 million, resumed on Thursday after a brief pause due to the New Hampshire primary on Tuesday, and the first day back in court after Trump’s resounding success in the Granite State did not see an end to the bickering which has characterized this trial heretofore.

A jury is set to decide the amount of damages Trump must pay to E. Jean Carroll, following his liability finding last year for sexual abuse and defamation. Carroll, a former advice columnist for Elle magazine, is seeking $10 million. Although not required to appear in this civil proceeding, Trump had vowed last week to attend the entire trial.

The jury is expected to hear closing arguments on Friday.

During the trial, Trump took the stand on Thursday, marking his first time addressing a jury since his presidency. E. Jean Carroll, the accuser, initiated the lawsuit.

Judge Lewis Kaplan limited Trump’s lawyer, Alina Habba, to two questions in Trump’s testimony. Dressed in a dark blue suit, white shirt and light blue tie, Trump began his testimony around 2:15 p.m., with Carroll observing from a close distance.

“You viewed your deposition, didn’t you?” Habba asked.

“Yes, I did,” Trump replied.

“Do you stand by it?” Habba probed.

“One hundred percent. Yes,” Trump confirmed.

Habba then asked if Trump denied Carroll’s sexual assault allegations for self-defense.

“Yes, I did,” Trump answered. “That’s exactly right. [Carroll] said something I considered a false allegation.”

However, Kaplan jumped in and instructed the jury to disregard Trump’s statements following his initial affirmation.

Habba’s subsequent question was whether Trump ever intended to harm Carroll, addressing claims that he had incited his followers against her.

“No, I just wanted to defend myself, my family … and frankly, the presidency,” Trump responded.

The judge directed the jury to ignore everything after “No.”

Following Trump’s brief testimony, his legal team concluded their case for the day. Closing arguments are scheduled for Friday.
