US personnel have been injured in a suspected rocket attack against Al Asad airbase in Iraq, according to three US officials who spoke to Reuters. The outlet reported that several US personnel were injured during the attack.
The outlet reported that the sources were citing preliminary information about the attack which could change. Security sources told the outlet that two Katyusha rockets were fired at the base in western Iraq, on Monday.
"Base personnel are conducting a post-attack damage assessment," one of the officials commented. The attack comes as concerns over tensions in the region have mounted with the killings of Hamas and Hezbollah terrorist group leaders.
Human Events senior editor Jack Posobiec reported that five to six Americans were injured and that there were several getting surgery.
Iran has vowed to retaliate in response to the assassinations and is the backer of both Hamas and Hezbollah. The Pentagon has sent reinforcements to the region in the case of an attack from Iran on Israel. Multiple reports have said that an attack from Iran against Israel is imminent. There have been increased tensions as the war between Hamas and Israel started last year on Oct. 7.
Last week, US Central Command forces were able to destroy an Iranian-backed Houthi missile and launcher in Yemen, as said in a press release.
"It was determined these weapons presented an imminent threat to U.S. and coalition forces, and merchant vessels in the region. These actions were taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure," Central Command stated at the time.
In recent weeks, Iranian-backed Iraqi groups have started launching attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria, according to Stars and Stripes.
