Former President Donald Trump speculated Tuesday that he was shot because opponents call him a “threat to democracy,” as FBI investigators continue to investigate the motive behind his near-assassination more than two weeks ago.

“They say I’m not democratic, I’m not democratic. I’m a threat to democracy. It’s just a sound bite, it means nothing to them to say it,” Trump said on the “Sid & Friends in the Morning” radio show.

“Maybe it’s the reason I was shot. Who knows? Rhetorically, it’s a terrible thing to say about somebody like me, but they say it all the time,” he added.

The FBI has yet to identify a motive for why 20-year-old gunman Thomas Crooks shot Trump at a rally on July 13 in Butler, Pa.

The agency is conducting an investigation and said it found Crooks searching for how far Lee Harvey Oswald was from President John F. Kennedy during that assassination, and that he could have made “antisemitic and anti-immigrant” posts online.

Crooks shot at Trump from a nearby roof midway through the rally, grazing Trump in the ear and fatally hitting firefighter Corey Comperatore.

The gunman was fatally shot by the Secret Service after firing on the former president.

Trump then said in the radio interview that the Democratic Party is the real “threat” to democracy because Democratic National Committee delegates — not voters — will choose the party nominee after President Biden suspended his campaign.

“And actually, they’re the threat. Joe Biden is incompetent and then they took his 14 million votes and gave it to somebody else instead of going to a primary system,” Trump said.

The GOP nominee said Vice President Kamala Harris — whom Biden endorsed as his replacement — is “far more incompetent” and “more radical” than the sitting president.

He also claimed Harris “doesn’t like Israel” and “she doesn’t like Jewish people,” as shown by her icy remarks to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Harris has framed her campaign around “prosecuting” Trump for his policies and previous actions, given her experience as a prosecutor in San Francisco and California attorney general.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre responded to Trump’s claim at a press briefing on Tuesday. 

“The president has always been very clear when it comes to violent political rhetoric. There’s no place here in this country, in our nation for it,” Jean-Pierre said of Biden.

She also pointed to Biden’s Oval Office address in which he called for “lowering the temperature” after Trump was shot.
