Technician burned from explosion in guest house

A technician working in a cottage in Sewickley Heights, Pennsylvania, was hospitalized with burns Tuesday when the house blew up.

The main mansion on the property 500 feet from the cottage was not affected.

One of the property’s residents told Pittsburgh ABC affiliate WTAE-TV that the victim was trying to turn on the pilot light on a furnace in the guest house when the building burst. She did not provide her name.

The unnamed technician was the only person inside the guest house at the time of the blast, Aleppo Township Volunteer Fire Co. Chief Bill Davis Jr. told Pittsburgh’s Tribune-Review. The victim was sent to a local hospital.

The blast was strong enough to shake nearby houses. One neighbor, Rich Engler, lives a couple of doors down and called 911 upon arriving at the scene.

“As I got up there, I started shouting, ‘Is anybody around, is anybody around, can we help?’ And I hear a faint, faint voice saying, ‘Help me, help me.’ I ran back to look at him and he was in total shock. I couldn’t even believe somebody made it out of that explosion alive, and I could see his hands were really burned up,” Mr. Engler told KDKA-TV, a Pittsburgh CBS affiliate.

Columbia Gas is working with local authorities to determine the cause of the blast.
